Does tooth whitening work on fillings?
Whitening treatment only works on natural tooth enamel. If you have any crowns, bridges, veneers or other restorations visible when you smile, you may need them replaced at the completion of your whitening treatment. Waiting to replace your restorations until after your whitening treatment will allow a better colour match. A consultation before whitening will allow us to inform you if you have any restorations which may need replacing. We will also be able to explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have. We will also take pre-treatment photos for comparison and take impressions of your teeth to make your custom-made trays.
What tooth whitening treatments do we offer?
There are two professional ways to achieve an alluring white smile. The first is an in-chair procedure that takes a little over an hour and can whiten your teeth in just the one appointment. Compared to the take-home procedure where you will achieve similar results, but over two weeks if using it nightly. During the in-chair procedure, the gel is applied to your teeth and activated by a special developed light. The gel may need to be re-applied two or three times during your appointment. The take home kit contains the same whitening gel as the in-chair procedure – just not as strong. You will be made custom-made trays just for your teeth for the perfect fit. This will allow maximum contact with your tooth enamel whilst protecting your gums. They are worn for a certain amount of time – mainly overnight for convenience. Many of our patients prefer the take-home procedure as they can lighten their smile in the comfort and privacy of their own home, at times to suit their schedule. If choosing the in-chair procedure you will need to stabilse the shade with a take-home treatment as well.
What is the Child Benefits Schedule?
The Child Benefits Schedule is a dental benefits program for eligible children aged 2-17 years that provides up to $1000 in benefits to the child for basic dental services. The program includes: examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing and fillings.
How long until I see results with my whitening?
One of the main reasons in-chair whitening is popular is because it can offer an instant result, perfect for those with an upcoming important event such as a job interview or wedding. For the take-home treatment, your desired result may take up to 10-14 days to achieve, although you may notice a change after 3-4 days. It is important to follow the directions to achieve the best results. Our team will explain everything you need to know to safely and correctly use the treatment at home.
How much does my healthfund cover towards dental treatment?
We are unable to swipe your healthfund card until after you have had treatment. If you wish to find out how much you will get back from your fund BEFORE your appointment, then you need to contact your healthfund. Where possible we can provide you with an estimated plan containing item numbers which you can quote to your fund and calculate what your gap balance will be.
At what age should I start bringing my children to see a Dentist?
Once your child turns three and their teeth start appearing then that is the time to start bringing them to see a Dentist. Not necessarily will they require treatment, but a regular visit will get them used to what we do and the instruments that we use. As they get older, we will introduce more instruments in fun ways and get them involved. The aim of bringing them at an early age is to try and prevent major treatment at a later stage. The worst thing you want for your child is for their first visit to be a toothache requiring urgent treatment which may frighten them. Another suggestion is when a family member has an appointment, bring your younger children along to have a look at what we do. This will take a lot of pressure off when it is their turn.
I suffer from bleeding gums, is this normal?
Healthy gums are not meant to bleed. Bleeding can be a sign of gingivitis or gum disease. Our Dentists will be able to examine your gums and offer treatment. If you experience bleeding whilst flossing, persevere with it. As long as it is not hurting then you are not doing any damage. The more regular you floss the less you will experience bleeding.
Is tooth whitening safe?
Extensive research has been conducted on whitening products to ensure they are completely safe for your teeth and surrounding gum tissue with the only notable side effect being some sensitivity to hot and cold. This will usually subside several hours after completing your treatment. A very small percentage of patients may experience a dull ache; this can be treated with an over the counter pain relief medication. At Smile@Norwest, we have carefully selected the whitening products to ensure you receive the safest and most rigorously tested available. If your sensivitity continues, you should stop treatment for a few days. Often, use of a desentising toothpaste can relieve the problem. If you have any further concerns, consult one of our Dentists before recommencing treatment.
What do I do if I have an accident and my tooth gets knocked or knocked out?
If you experience a knock to a tooth, it’s always a good idea to have it checked by a Dentist to make sure no damage has been done to the nerve. If you experience any pain or discolouration (even months afterwards) then you should schedule an apppointment. If your tooth gets knocked out, avoid handling the root part of the tooth as much as possilbe. Rinse the tooth with milk (or whater if that is all you have access to) and try and place it back into the socket. Call the surgery ASAP and we will treat you as an emergancy trauma case and have you seen by the first available Dentist.
How can I pay for my treatment?
We accept EFTPOS, Visa, MasterCard and Amex. Direct deposit may be possible.
Complex and more expensive treatment patients may be able to use Zip money to help them with the payment.
